The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG to Date

The anticipation around The Game Awards was significant, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a audacious trailer that included memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.

A Different Direction

For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This distinction implies that the team could be building a real-time experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it sparked the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, player agency, and complex character building—traits that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs you can achieve by choosing a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also famously open-ended, allowing players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Most missions can be completed in diverse methods, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, players can anticipate another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
