The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.
The former head of state was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than 27 years in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.
Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after fresh information came to light.
This involved seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a public vigil that could "allow for a chance to flee".
Court Filing Details Flight Fears
In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said data from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.
This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.
His child, Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.
The senator wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Will you battle for your homeland, or watch it all from your phone there on your settee? I urge you to fight with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the possibility of his move to embassies near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a history of planning to ask for protection through a consular facility", a announcement said.
The legal document emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.
International Reactions
The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist US President Trump, prompting him to impose a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.
He is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will experience a detention review on the following day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with digital surveillance.
They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be authorized to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he needed ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other health problems.
Details of Guilty Verdict
Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Lula.
High Court judges said that he was aware of a plan which included plans to kill Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.
The plot was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. His successor was sworn in without incident on 1 January 2023.
But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, thousands of his followers attacked and damaged official structures in the capital, Brasília.
The security forces intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.
The magistrates found that the protesters had been provoked by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, bring back stability and bring him back to power.
At the time, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also barred from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.
The former president called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him competing in the next presidential race.
