EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In other legal news:

  • A federal judge has blocked attempts to reduce security grants to local governments which resist specific federal immigration rules. The judge stated the action was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans prior to the holiday period, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to accept a limited number of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
